International Women’s Day March in El Salvador, 2018
The Center for Reproductive Rights in partnership with Colectiva Feminista and Agrupación Ciudadana por la Despenalización del Aborto has a long standing campaign and casework to free the more than 17 women in prison in El Salvador for obstetric emergencies. In some cases, these women were accused of murder after miscarrying and sentenced to more than 30 years in prison.
For International Women’s Day in March 2018, people marched in El Salvador in support of these imprisoned women and women’s rights in general. I designed shirts, signs, and a banner for the event which were printed near our Bogota office. While a simple design within a tight campaign and super tight timeline, I’m immensely proud seeing these brave people in the streets fighting for justice. The shirts were even worn by advocates soon after when another woman jailed for a stillbirth was freed after 14 years. It’s in projects like this that I see the impact a design can make in the world.
